-- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition
---------------------
>From Jane Dewell, Belt Collins Hawaii, Honolulu, HI:

I am working on the Hawaii State Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan. One
of the priority topics for the plan revision is public education. I am in
the process of identifying model public education programs addressing solid
waste issues (e.g., source reduction, recycling, illegal dumping, commercial
recycling) that are conducted at state, county and community levels. The
programs would provide good examples of how to conduct public education at
various levels (i.e., state, community), and assist Hawaii in developing a
public education model approach to getting people aware of and involved in
addressing solid waste issues. I would appreciate receiving information from
this group on programs that they believe would be good examples of public
education for solid waste. Thanks!

University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA:

In response to Marcia Rutan's 5/20/99 posting -- Thanks for the compliment
on our curriculum. We also have produced several displays that are
available on loan. The new web site for the Center for Energy and
Environmental Education's Simple Living Initiatives program (publishers of
the Simplifying for Wellness curriculum) gives more details:

Here is the address for a 5/19/99 article (forwarded by Pauh Wang and Todd
Carey) on the Environmental News Network website about a company's
disposable bags and utensils that they claim are "entirely biodegradable" in
a normal composting process. If they catch on, these products could have
implications for institutional on-site composting and possibly home
composting.
