12 Mar 99 - office paper reduction; transport packaging; hardware stores
** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition ----------------------------------------- From Renee Kimball, waste prevention advocate, Portland, OR, in response to recent postings about encouraging office paper reduction: Getting folks to go along with waste reduction measures -- some ideas that have worked with usually non-compliant folks: 1. Place a box next to the photocopier for folks to place once-used paper in. A sign with FACE DOWN works to keep user ready. Instructions on which direction and which side up at the machine encourage manual double-sided copying (nothing is more frustrating than trying to get it right). 2. The box on the desk also works well -- if you purchase reams of paper in the small boxes, these are the perfect size. "Once is not enough" as a campaign slogan works also. 3. "Awards" for lack of compliance worked well in a legal firm. Anyone who consistently left their light/computer on overnight or was caught with usable paper in the waste bin arrived on Monday morning to see the garish award on their door.
