** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition --------------------- >From Lisa Ingmarsson, Ann Arbor, MI: Hi. I'm e-mailing from Washtenaw County Public Works, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I'm working on a waste assessment in restaurants in the area. I am doing a survey to be sent out and returned, and also dumpster waste sorts. Could people please contact me with information on: Sorts they've done; their methodology; and pointers about keeping the sort simple (for example, categories, transportation of the waste, ideal number of samples, good location to sort). Thank you. Lisa K. Ingmarsson, 1204 East University Ave., Ann Arbor, MI, 48104. Phone: (734) 668-7672 E-mail: LKI (A T) umich (D O T) edu --------------------- >From Thor Peterson, Seattle Public Utilities: I'm working on compiling a list of reuse-related information to accompany a database of businesses involved in reuse activities in Seattle. The list contains information on maintenance, repair, buying tips, and links to other sites with pertinent topics, broken down by broad product category. For example, the Large Appliances section has repair and maintenance information and links. It also has information on resource efficiency (energy and water use) to convey the message that reuse needs to be conducted in context - that sometimes it's best not to reuse. Other sections are more straightforward; the bicycle section has a link to "The Workbench," an online bicycle repair manual. So I'm wondering what sort of information and web links people think would be useful (related to any particular product or general information) to help people get into the reuse habit. Please email me - thor ( D O T ) peterson ( A T ) ci ( D O T ) seattle ( D O T ) wa ( D O T ) us Thanks! ------------------ >From Tom Watson, Waste Prevention Forum moderator: Several people have asked whether we could have an archive of the past postings on the Forum. I'm excited to announce that we now have one, thanks to Darin Cosgrove of Reuses.com in Brockville, Ontario. Darin volunteered to set up the archive for us and host it, and he has done a great job! With this archive on the Internet, you can easily search for a topic and find out if there were any past postings about it. For example, when I typed in "junk mail," it came up with 11 different entries that had the words "junk mail" in them. Right now the archive has the past 40 or so installments of the Forum, going back to the beginning of this year, but it may eventually go back even further. The archive automatically adds each new installment within 24 hours. I think this will really be helpful, and I'd like to give Darin a huge THANK YOU for doing this for us! Check it out at: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive/ ------------------ >From Jerry Powell, Resource Recycling magazine, Portland, OR: Some 92 percent of the industry-standard beer bottles used in British Columbia are returned for refilling. Presently the B.C. beer industry has 13.5 million 12-packs in circulation, and each bottle is refilled 15 times on average. E-mail: RESRECYCLE [ A T ] aol [ D O T ] com ----------------- The next five postings are in response to the 6/2/99 posting from Ann Schneider asking for information on Master Composter programs around the nation. ------------------- >From Dave Peters, Kitsap County Dept. of Public Works, Port Orchard, WA: Check out this site and look by state for listings of Master Composter programs: http://www.mastercomposter.com/ ------------------- >From John Crisley, Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Quality Engineering: I forwarded the request for information to Ann McGovern. She is the Massachusetts Compost Program Coordinator for our Network of Home Composters. She's been running this program for years and knows it inside and out. Ann also suggested the Master Composter website (see site address in the above posting), which is administered by a Mary J. Tynes out of Plano, TX. E-mail: John ( DOT ) Crisley ( AT ) state ( DOT ) ma ( DOT ) us -------------------- >From Mahlon Aldridge, Ecology Action, Santa Cruz, CA: Ecology Action runs a Master Composter program. Piet Canin is the Coordinator. For further information, contact Tanya Baker at Tanya ( D O T ) K ( D O T ) Baker ( A T ) co ( D O T ) lane ( D O T ) or ( D O T ) us -------------------- >From Celeste Duncan, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU): SPU's Master Composter program trains volunteers to teach others about yardwaste and food waste composting, natural lawn care, mulching, and other landscape waste reduction techniques. Interested volunteers participate in 40 hours of training, and give back to the community by staffing Master Composter booths at community events, doing slideshows and demonstrations for groups, or any other projects they can think of to spread the word about composting. The training usually happens evenings and weekends in late winter (February-April). To learn more about the Master Composter program or get application information, call the Compost Hotline, 206-633-0224.
