** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition -------- Forum archive: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive ------------------- >From Mark Clayton, The Pop Shoppe and The Soft Drink Company, Seattle, WA: For nine years my company (The Pop Shoppe) has been transforming the environment by eliminating the needless pollution caused by bottles and cans associated with consuming soft drinks. We reduce this waste by selling beverage syrup concentrates to our customers. One gallon of concentrate eliminates 11 six-packs of cans. Our customers have our home and office soda fountain so they can carbonate water and make any sort of soft drink they desire. For the past nine years we have bought syrups in plastic gallon containers from manufacturers and resold them. Soon we will begin manufacturing our own syrups. I would appreciate any and all input regarding the packaging of these syrups and how we can eliminate as much waste as possible. When providing input please let me know how I can contact you if I need more information. Thanks for any help I can get or for directing me to any other place I might get help with this matter. One hundred years ago, the world population was 1.6 billion. World population currently rises by 78 million each year, according to the United Nations Population Division. That's like adding 1.5 million people, or a city the size of Philadelphia, every week. All those people consume a lot of resources. In 1900, only a few thousand barrels of oil were used each day worldwide. Today, humanity uses 72 million barrels a day, according to the Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research group based in Washington, DC. Use of metals has risen from 20 million tons a year to 1.2 billion tons, Worldwatch says. - end - |
