** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition -------- Forum archive: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive --------------------- From the website of the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), Sacramento, CA (forwarded by Beth Koprowski and Kinley Deller): The CIWMB has compiled statistics on solid waste generation rates from a variety of sources. These statistics could be very useful for programs attempting to measure waste generation and the success of waste prevention programs. The statistics are on these web pages: Residential - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGResid.htm Commercial - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGCommer.htm Industrial - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGIndust.htm Service - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGServic.htm Institutional - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGInstit.htm (Institutional includes schools and hospitals.) -------------------- Excerpted from message from Marcia Rutan, Snohomish County Solid Waste Management Division, Everett, WA: I found the website below, "Calculate Your Ecological Footprint," buried several websites deep in the new Iowa waste prevention website (1/10/01 Forum posting). I did this calculation and found it fascinating. http://www.lead.org/leadnet/footprint/intro.htm This site is from Redefining Progress, a public policy organization that seeks to ensure a more sustainable and socially equitable world. Marcia's e-mail: Marcia [ D O T ] Rutan [ A T ] co [ D O T ] snohomish [ D O T ] wa [ D O T ] us -------------------- From David Wollner, BRING Recycling, Eugene, OR, responding to the recent postings on polystyrene: Here's a little more information on polystyrene recycling that I think is germane to the 1/9/01 query. International Foam Solutions out of Florida has developed a closed system for polystyrene recycling that uses a non-toxic citrus-based solvent that turns the stuff into a portable gel. The reduction is about 1/8th of the original. They have contracts with several school districts in New York, California, and elsewhere. The company's website is at: http://www.internationalfoamsolutions.com/ David's e-mail: bring [A T] efn [D O T] org -------------------- From Jetta Wallace, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle, WA: POLYSTYRENE PEANUT REUSE The article below (Waste News, 1/9/01) describes a form of product stewardship. I called the peanut hotline and asked if this was strictly a reuse project. A representative told me that the "injured peanuts," ones that are too damaged for reuse, are sent off to be recycled. http://www.wastenews.com/headlines2.html?id=979076427 Jetta's e-mail: Jetta [ D O T ] Wallace [ A T ] ci [ D O T ] seattle [ D O T ] wa [ D O T ] us -------------------- Link to a Fall, 2000, article by Jessica Nelson, about how vegetable oil-based lubricants are emerging as an environmentally-preferable alternative to petroleum oil products (article first seen in Karen Hamilton's Environmental Purchasing Bulletin): http://www.carbohydrateeconomy.org/library/admin/uploadedfiles/Harvesting_Lubricants.htm This article was first published in The Carbohydrate Economy newsletter, a publication of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. -------------------- The links to the next two articles were first seen on Jim DiPeso's Pacific Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center information service. ------------------- Link to a detailed article on the design of single-use cameras, written by Karen Auguston Field, which originally appeared in the 5/15/00 issue of Design News: http://www.manufacturing.net/dc/215/010501g.htm ------------------- Link to a detailed technical article on how to track reusable transport packaging, written by Jim Whalen, which originally appeared in the 10/01/00 issue of Warehousing Management: http://www.manufacturing.net/articles/wm/2000/1001/article3.html - end - |
