From the website of the California Integrated Waste Management Board
(CIWMB), Sacramento, CA (forwarded by Beth Koprowski and Kinley Deller):

The CIWMB has compiled statistics on solid waste generation rates from a
variety of sources. These statistics could be very useful for programs
attempting to measure waste generation and the success of waste prevention
programs. The statistics are on these web pages:

Residential - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGResid.htm

Commercial - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGCommer.htm

Industrial - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGIndust.htm

Service - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGServic.htm

Institutional - http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WasteChar/WasteGenRates/WGInstit.htm
(Institutional includes schools and hospitals.)

Excerpted from message from Marcia Rutan, Snohomish County Solid Waste
Management Division, Everett, WA:

I found the website below, "Calculate Your Ecological Footprint," buried
several websites deep in the new Iowa waste prevention website (1/10/01
Forum posting). I did this calculation and found it fascinating.

more sustainable and socially equitable world.

From David Wollner, BRING Recycling, Eugene, OR, responding to the recent
postings on polystyrene:

Here's a little more information on polystyrene recycling that I think is
germane to the 1/9/01 query. International Foam Solutions out of Florida has
developed a closed system for polystyrene recycling that uses a non-toxic
citrus-based solvent that turns the stuff into a portable gel. The reduction
is about 1/8th of the original. They have contracts with several school
districts in New York, California, and elsewhere. The company's website is
at: http://www.internationalfoamsolutions.com/

From Jetta Wallace, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle, WA:

POLYSTYRENE PEANUT REUSE
The article below (Waste News, 1/9/01) describes a form of product
stewardship. I called the peanut hotline and asked if this was strictly a
reuse project. A representative told me that the "injured peanuts," ones
that are too damaged for reuse, are sent off to be recycled.
