** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition -------- Forum archive: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive --------------------- Link to the website for the New York City WasteLess Program, a program for commercial waste prevention and energy and water conservation: http://nycwasteless.com/ This website offers extensive, very impressive resources on waste prevention in these sectors: Airport and airline; hospital; manufacturing; restaurant; retail; retail food; schools; stadiums, arenas and convention centers; and wholesale. It also has sections on measurement and packaging. Note from Tom: Anyone interested in business waste prevention should definitely check this out. I think it's awesome - many layers of useful information. --------------------- Excerpted from a release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise Program, Washington, DC (forwarded by Barbara Zaccheo): EPA's voluntary partnership program, WasteWise, recently issued a WasteWise Update on Electronics Reuse and Recycling. It explores a topic of increasing concern to many businesses and other organizations - what to do with end-of-life computers and other electronics, and how to revise purchasing strategies to avoid future end-of-life disposal problems. It features strategies adopted by WasteWise partners to reduce the waste generated by their electronic products, as well as actions taken by some electronics manufacturers to enhance reuse and recycling of their products. The Update also looks at actions taken by governments to improve management of electronics waste, such as encouraging electronic product collection programs for households and small businesses. The Update can be viewed at www.epa.gov/wastewise/pub.htm Scroll down and click on "WasteWise Update: Electronics Reuse and Recycling." It's in Adobe Acrobat portable document format (PDF). --------------------- Excerpted from a job announcement from Bob Doppelt, Center for Watershed and Community Health, Portland State University, Portland, OR, and Springfield, OR (forwarded by Janet Nazy): POSITION AVAILABLE - SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION AND TRAINING COORDINATOR The Center for Watershed and Community Health (CWCH), a non-profit research institute affiliated with the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University, is seeking a half to full-time Sustainability Education and Training Coordinator in Washington state. They do accept clean Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) packaging, not food service items, and never any contaminated material. For people who want to recycle food service polystyrene, there is an organization in Washington, DC, that is comprised of the food service manufacturers. It's the Polystyrene Packaging Council, a division of the Society of Plastics. Mike Levy is the executive director of the Council. His direct phone number is 703-253-0647 and his e-mail is: mike_levy [A T] plastics [D O T] org All school districts and any other organizations with food service polystyrene should contact Mike directly for recycling information. Sorry for any confusion. Ann's e-mail: SchneiderAnn ( AT ) juno ( DOT ) com Note from Tom: Since we try to keep this listserv focused on reduction and reuse, we usually do not run items that deal just with recycling. We ran this one because it was a correction of a previous item that covered both reuse and recycling. -------------------- Excerpted from a message from Rebecca Mebane, National Recycling Coalition (NRC), Alexandria, VA (forwarded by Gary Liss and Bill Reed): The National Recycling Coalition's 20th Annual Congress & Exposition will be held September 30 - October 3, 2001, in Seattle, Washington.
