Saraswati's e-mail: SARASWATI [D O T] CHANDRAMOULI [A T] saic [D O T] com -------------------- Excerpted from a 2/15/01 Reuters News Service item (first seen in Jim DiPeso's Pacific Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center bulletin): FEDERAL EXPRESS SEEKS FUEL-EFFICIENT TRUCKS FedEx Express, a part of Federal Express Corp., wants manufacturers to submit proposals for the design and development of a delivery truck that will increase fuel efficiency by 50 percent and reduce emissions by 90 percent, the company said in a Feb. 13 statement. FedEx Express and the Alliance for Environmental Innovation, an advocacy group, are working together on this project. This request for proposals calls for design and development of a commercial delivery truck that will eventually replace the present FedEx Express truck, the company said. The hope is that the proposed truck would work as well as those in the present fleet and cost about the same over the vehicle's lifetime. The joint project wants the trucks to deliver major reductions in pollution, fuel consumption and use of resources, the company said. The project also wants to accelerate the time to market of full production-scale environmentally friendly vehicles sooner than regulations require. For more information on this project, see this Alliance for Environmental Innovation web page: http://www.environmentaldefense.org/Alliance/cleanertrucks.html -------------------- From Thomas, the U.S. Library of Congress information service (first seen on the Health Care Without Harm website): MERCURY REDUCTION BILL INTRODUCED IN U.S. SENATE On Feb. 15, U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced Senate Bill 351, which is described as: "A bill to amend the Solid Waste Disposal Act to reduce the quantity of mercury in the environment by limiting use of mercury fever thermometers and improving collection, recycling, and disposal of mercury." The bill's co-sponsor is Senator John Kerry (D-Massachusetts). The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Note: As of today, the text of the bill was not yet posted on the Thomas website. The full text will probably be posted in the next few days.
