Excerpted from a message from Steve Engel, Metro, Portland, OR, responding
to the 3/26/01 posting seeking curriculum materials that introduce 5th to
12th graders to the importance of pollution prevention for business and
industry:

Metro (Portland's three-county regional service district) has an
environmental education staff, primarily focused on teaching K-12 about
solid waste issues. We also have a public (adult) education program re:
hazwastes. The school-oriented group has a couple of curricula and a little
advice:
- Look for the National Association of Environmental Educators on the web.
- There's a book called "CHEMICALS, Choosing Wisely - A Student Audit of
Resource Use" (Teacher Resource Guide), published by Dale Seymour
Publications (1998) as part of the Environmental Action label. ("Analyze -
Consider options - Take action in our neighborhoods.") The address is 2725
Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA, 94025. Their customer service number is
(800) 872-1100.
- The Air & Waste Management Association (One Gateway Center, Third Floor,
Pittsburgh, PA, 15222, phone (412) 232-3444, fax (412) 232-3450) puts out an
"Environmental Resource Guide on Air Quality" for grades 6-8 and grades
9-12.

From Barbara Zaccheo, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), WasteWise
Program, Washington, DC:

A new EPA report, "The United States Experience with Economic Incentives for
Protecting the Environment," assesses the role of economic incentives for
controlling environmental pollution. The report documents hundreds of uses
of economic incentives for controlling pollution at all levels of
government, to both supplement and substitute for traditional regulatory
approaches. WasteWise and other voluntary programs are briefly discussed.
You can find this report at: http://www.epa.gov/economics/ Click on the
title of the report, on the right. The full report is in Adobe Portable
Document Format (PDF).

From Tom Watson, National Waste Prevention Coalition and King County Solid
Waste Division, Seattle, WA:

NEW PRODUCT
Georgia-Pacific has just launched a new line of disposable cups, under the
Dixie Cups brand. They are called "PerfecTouch To Go!" They are basically
"to go" cups, with lids, designed to use when you take drinks with you from
home. There are 16 cups and 16 lids in a package, and they are for hot or
cold drinks (although they seem to be aiming for coffee drinkers).

The blurb in the ad reads:
"Enjoy your home-brewed coffee on the road!
- Specially insulated to keep beverages hot
- Easy-grip surface
- Tight-fitting lid
- AND they're disposable!"
