The next two items are in response to the 4/5/01 posting about the new U.S.
federal law requiring financial companies to send their customers an
"opt-out" form by July 1, 2001. Sending in this form can reduce unwanted
mail.

From Brian McVay, Eugene, OR:

With regards to junk mail reduction, I recently heard a story of a U.S.
postal worker, on their day off and while attending a recycling
presentation, express how utilizing the Direct Marketing Association's "Do
Not Mail" list diminishes the U.S. Postal Service's income, because junk
mail is such a big portion of it. I need to hear stories like this to put
things into perspective. With all due respect to the internal waste
reduction efforts of the Postal Service, I say, give them Saturday off, I'm
going to opt out wherever possible.

describes how five Detroit-area households were asked to save their junk
mail during the month of March, to see how much they received. Six pounds
of unwanted mail per household was the overall average for the five
households. One family accumulated nine pounds of unwanted mail.
