        ** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM **
-- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition

Forum archive: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive

--------------------
The first two postings are in response to the 12/17/01 item about Danish
professor Bjorn Lomborg's new book "The Skeptical Environmentalist," which
makes the argument that many environmental worries are "phantom problems"
created or inflated by the environmental movement for its own ends.

--------------------
From Susan Salterberg, Center for Energy & Environmental Education,
University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA:

Bjorn Lomborg wrote an article in The Economist August 4, 2001. For those
of you who teach and want to share an opposing view (anti-environmental) -
this article would be good for that. A critical thinker could spot many of
his claims as discounting each other.

Maybe the articles from The Economist and Grist would, together, stimulate
good discussion in an upper-level classroom or other forums.

Lomborg, evidently, says he used to be a "left-wing Greenpeace[r]." I think
his pendulum has taken a swing to the far right.

From Donald Van Dyke, California Integrated Waste Management Board,
Sacramento, CA:

WOW! What planet does Lomborg live on? Get me a one-way ticket, I'm going
there!

This is just for laughs, right? Because if it's not, I'm going to cry.

From Kinley Deller and Tom Watson, King County Solid Waste Division,
Seattle, WA:

Have you been looking for some really cool yet out-of-date book covers with
a waste prevention message to them? Well, if so, we've got what you need.
Six thousand book covers have been uncovered in our storeroom and we'd like
to move them out. They were created a few years ago as part of a King
County waste prevention and recycling campaign aimed at high school
students.

These book covers would also make good posters. They are about 23 inches
across and 12 inches down. The art on them is hip and pretty nice. They
have great quotes on them from members of Seattle-area bands like Pearl Jam,
Soundgarden and the Posies (mid-90's kinds of groups). They also include
waste prevention tidbits and info about reducing packaging, reducing junk
mail and the amount of plastic in the waste stream.

Here are a couple of the quotes (all the quotes are displayed in a jazzy,
edgy style) on the book covers:
- "Our disposable society - too much extracurricular garbage. I'm guilty
too, so I'm off to the weeds to grow a garden - bypassing jewel boxes and
plastic Coke bottles." - Jeff Ament, Pearl Jam
- "If you see a company that puts unnecessary packaging on anything you buy
- tell them about it and stop buying what they sell. If enough people do
it, they'll have to change." - The Posies

The dot-com crowd might like these. If you're interested in giving away
some of these book covers, please e-mail Kinley and we can send you as many
as you think you can use. Thanks!

From Tom Watson, King County Solid Waste Division, Seattle, WA:

As 2001 winds down and we get ready for a new year, I just want to thank
everyone for participating in the Waste Prevention Forum. This past summer
the Forum celebrated its fifth birthday. I have learned a lot from all the
information that you all have contributed to the Forum, and I know that many
others have too. I believe that we are making progress on waste prevention.
Reduction and reuse are becoming more visible, slowly but surely. You - the
waste prevention leaders from all over North America - are making a
difference.

As we do every year at this time, we're running the list, below, of the
names of all the subscribers to the Forum. It's interesting to see who all
is on the list (a lot more people end up receiving the Forum, because some
subscribers forward it to others). If you know of anyone else who would
like to join the Forum, just have them e-mail me.

It's been a tough year internationally, but here's hoping there will be more
peace in 2002. Hope you all have great holidays! - Tom
