From Susan Salterberg, Center for Energy & Environmental Education,
University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA:

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
I'm trying to further promote the importance of waste reduction, and the
following data will help me with a project related to that. Can you help?

I hear the "for every ton of garbage we generate, another 20 tons is
produced to create the product" statistic used often ("Escape from
Affluenza" video and others). Does anyone know where that stat came from?
I'd like the original source.

Related to that, I am trying to find data about industrial waste generation
vs. MSW (municipal solid waste). MSW stats are readily available, but
industrial are not. Even if I could get information that would compare MSW
to total waste (including air and water pollution, etc.), I'd welcome that.
I need references for the data, too. Thanks.

http://www.nycwasteless.com/indiv/index.html This website, "NYC
WasteLe$$," is produced by the New York City Waste Prevention Partnership,
which includes the New York City Department of Sanitation. This site is
aimed at individuals. There are also two connected sites, which are in the
process of being redesigned:

- For government: http://www.nycwasteless.com/gov-bus/citysense/index.htm

Excerpted from a message from Jeffrey Smedberg, County of Santa Cruz Public
Works Department, recycling programs, Santa Cruz, CA, responding to the
12/31/01 postings about adult diapers for incontinence:

There is an alternative to disposable adult diapers. A Santa Cruz company,
Lifestyles Emporium, offers a full line of "adult incontinent products" (as
they are more delicately referred to), including reusable cloth and
waterproof pants. All the products may be viewed in the on-line catalog at:
http://www.lifestylesemporium.com Click on "Our Store." Much of their
business is mail order. If you are in the area, you can stop by the retail
outlet and try on products. Although the initial investment for cloth
products is greater than for disposables, even with a laundry service the
payback is quick.

To better meet the needs of her customers, registered nurse and business
owner Peggy Lu Fay is setting up a sewing operation to manufacture cloth
products of her own improved designs. To meet the financial challenges of
the new operation, Ms. Fay has applied to the County of Santa Cruz's Waste
Reduction Grant Program for assistance. For a modest amount of matching
funds, she is seeking serious investors. Peggy Lu Fay may be contacted at:

From Tom Watson, King County Solid Waste Division, Seattle, WA, and the
National Waste Prevention Coalition:

"AFFLUENZA" PRODUCER WILL BE BOOTH GUEST AT NRC
For those of you who will be attending the National Recycling Congress (NRC)
in Seattle Jan. 13-16. I'd like to invite you all to stop by the ReDO (Reuse
Development Organization) and National Waste Prevention Coalition joint
booth. Also known as the "waste prevention lounge," this will be a meeting
place for people interested in reduction and reuse. We'll have a couch and
chairs, and the booth will feature some interesting examples of
waste-prevention related products, educational materials, posters, etc.

One special event at our booth is that from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan.
14, our guest will be television documentary producer and author John de
Graaf. John produced, wrote and edited the popular Public Broadcasting
Service (PBS) specials, "Affluenza" and "Escape from Affluenza," about the
modern-day epidemic of over-consumption. He is also co-author of the book,
"Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic," published last June. Although John
has produced primetime documentaries on various topics (and has won more
than 100 filmmaking awards), he has a special interest in the environment
and consumption issues.

We hope you can stop by our booth, either to meet John de Graaf, or at
another time. The exhibit hall will be open from 11 to 5:30 on Monday and
11 to 5 on Tuesday. Our booth is a double booth, numbers 601-700.
Depending on which set of entrance doors you go in, our booth should either
be in front of the doors, or just to the right.

For more information on the conference (schedule, etc.), see the National
Recycling Coalition's website at:
