From Polagaya Fine, Snohomish County Solid Waste Division, Everett, WA:

We badly need to redo our Waste Prevention Tips brochure. Does anyone have
any samples of this kind of brochure you could send me? Thanks.

From Rick Hlavka, Green Solutions, South Prairie, WA:

I just received the latest promotional CD from America Online (AOL), and
they are now sending out the CD in a metal case. It reminds me of an
Altoids tin on steroids, except that it's thin (about 3/8 of an inch thick).
Is this what people have been talking about or is this new? The CD is just
rattling around loose inside of it, along with a few slips of paper
containing pertinent information. I guess there might be some interesting
reuse options for the case, and if nothing else the case and the enclosed
paper are more universally recyclable, but it still seems like a significant
investment in materials and energy for the latest version of AOL (which I
could just download if I was so inclined). I'm tempted to suggest that we
should set up a collection program for these things, on the theory that
there is a good use for them that we will figure out later, except that
smacks of tire piles. I can see it now, people begin to discover large
piles of AOL CD cases in rural areas, and the piles continue to grow.

From Blair Pollock, Orange County Solid Waste Management Department, Chapel
Hill, NC, responding to the recent postings about hand dryers vs. paper
towels:

Is there any discussion of the industrial cloth drying towel as an
alternative here? We have them in our restroom at the office and they are
well-accepted by all.

Further, our local botanical garden at the University of North Carolina has
incorporated the paper towels from their restrooms into their on-site
composting with no apparent problems (that's almost always the only thing in
their restroom waste cans).

Excerpted from the January, 2002, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)
electronic newsletter (forwarded by Theresa Koppang):

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that businesses discard 3
million tons of office furniture each year. New USGBC member Revest
Northeast, the re-manufacturing arm of Steelcase, reclaims and
re-manufactures abandoned and out-dated Steelcase furniture, diverting it
from trash heaps and landfills. Revest negotiates for old furniture and
re-manufactures fully-warranted furniture to meet changing office needs, at
a fraction of the usual price. Revest, located in Manchester, CT, is also
ready to provide documentation for how re-manufactured furniture helps meet
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification
(Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality credits).
