** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition -------- Forum archive: http://www.nwpcarchive.org --------------------- TerraCycle programs to turn waste materials into products: http://www.terracycle.net This New Jersey-based company started out selling fertilizer made from worm castings, packaging the product in reused plastic bottles. Now TerraCycle also offers a variety of products from reused materials, and has set up networks to collect yogurt containers and juice pouches to reuse in new products. For each of those items collected, TerraCycle donates one to five cents to a school or charity of the collector's choice (these programs are sponsored by yogurt and juice companies). --------------------- Excerpted from a message from David Allaway, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Solid Waste Policy & Program Development, Portland, OR: The Oregon DEQ has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for life cycle inventory and impact analysis to assess the environmental burdens and impacts of processes and materials commonly used to deliver drinking water, and managing associated packaging during use and at end-of-life. The primary purpose of the project is to evaluate and illustrate the environmental burdens and impacts of a) tap water vs. bottled water, and b) the recycling vs. disposal of water bottles. Several other variables of interest to DEQ are described in the RFP. Proposals are due on Monday, March 14th. Please feel free to share this announcement with others who might be interested in proposing. To view the RFP, you must register as a user of ORPIN, the Oregon Procurement Information Network: https://orpin.oregon.gov/open.dll/ Basic subscription (which is all you need to view the RFP) is free. Thank you. They would like to become a greener office, and I'm wondering if you know of anyone who might be able to help them with this effort. They already recycle and likely have CFL light bulbs, and are progressive in many ways - but would like to hear other more challenging but doable things they could do to be more green. They wonder about carbon offsets for their travel, for example, paperless offices, or what other possibilities exist. Does anyone know of a high-quality consultant from the Midwest who has skills in this arena? I get the sense they really want to be pushed to be innovative. Thanks.
