** WASTE PREVENTION FORUM ** -- A project of the National Waste Prevention Coalition -------- Forum archive: http://www.nwpcarchive.org --------------------- Excerpted from a message from Lawrence Grodeska, SF Environment, Internet Communications, City and County of San Francisco: We here at SF Environment are contemplating starting a blog for commentary on environmental issues of the day in San Francisco. I have seen the King County EcoConsumer blog, and I would definitely be curious to hear from other municipalities who are dabbling with social media and web 2.0 to broaden the sphere of their outreach. If you have a blog up and running, my questions include: What data do you have on traffic? Have you gotten any feedback from your constituency? Has the blog generated additional interest and/or participation in your programs? Finally, have you done any promotion to get your blog out to the broader enviro community? Thanks. E-mail: Lawrence [ DOT ] Grodeska [ AT ] sfgov [ DOT ] org ---------------------------- Assistive Technology Exchange in New England: http://www.getATstuff.com The goal of this online exchange is to put AT (assistive technology) equipment that is not currently being used into the hands of someone who can benefit from it. This type of equipment includes walkers, bath chairs, hospital beds, wheelchairs, crutches, speaker phones, screen magnifiers, computers and much more. Some of the items are for sale and others are free. Six New England states support this program. --------------------- "End of Consumerism," 7/30/08 article from the London-based environmental website Off-Grid (forwarded by Jay Shepard): http://www.off-grid.net/2008/07/30/end-of-consumerism --------------------- "Blow to image of 'green' reusable nappy," 10/19/08 article in the Times of London (forwarded by Paul Dunn): http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article4969413.ece --------------------- "Old books: Sort, scan, resell or recycle," 10/12/08 article in the Tacoma News Tribune: http://www.thenewstribune.com/business/story/506388.html This article features Thrift Recycling Management (http://www.thriftrecycling.com), a four-year-old company based in Lakewood, Washington, which describes itself as the largest seller of used books on the Internet. --------------------- BookSwim: http://www.bookswim.com This is a for-profit, online book rental library service, based on the Netflix model of DVD movie rentals. ---------------------- "This Old Recyclable House," 9/26/08 article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/magazine/28house-t.html ---------------------- From Tom Watson, King County Solid Waste Division, Seattle, and the National Waste Prevention Coalition: Once again, several cities and counties in Washington state are sponsoring Waste Free Holidays programs (http://www.wastefreeholidays.com), where participating businesses offer discounts on "experience gifts." This year, for the Seattle/King County program, we have a fun online thingy, the Gift-O-Matic (http://www.holidaygiftomatic.com), to help folks find an experience gift for that special someone. - end - |
